Retellings giveaway, book club info, and a delicious medieval-inspired autumn recipe!
Happy fall!
Hello, hello!
This is a quick missive to let you know about a six-book folklore and myth retelling sweepstakes that Orbit is doing on Instagram, which includes The Book of Gothel! Some of my favorite recently (or soon-to-be) published books are in this bundle. I haven’t read all of them, but I can confirm that Kaikeyi and Dowry of Blood are especially amazing. The sweepstakes opens today and closes on August 31st (Wednesday). It’s free to enter, and there are easy-to-follow directions in the Instagram post below:
In other Gothel-related news, if you happen to be in a book club that is considering reading the novel, my publisher released this beautiful reading guide earlier this month, which you can use to facilitate your discussions! I love doing author visits, too, so please reach out to ask about those if you’re interested.
Finally, with autumn coming, I thought I would share a digital version of the medieval-inspired recipe card from the preorder campaign with newsletter subscribers. This is the recipe that Kunegunde and Haelewise make together for an offering on the last new moon of autumn in chapter 14.
It’s a medieval-inspired mashup of Allerheiligenstriezel (an All Saint’s Day braided yeast pastry) and strudel. If you make it, be sure to take the time to smell the spices after you stir them together—the scent of the cinnamon, nutmeg, and aniseed mixture is divine!
The last new moon of autumn this year will be October 25.
Happy fall!

Mary,
I read and loved Book of Gothel! Then I passed my copy along to a friend, with instructions to keep sharing it with others. I loved how you combined a good story with real depth of research. As a writer plus developmental editor, I would love to know more about how you did that. And I hope you'll come to Chicago sometime--we have some good bookstores!
Cheers,
Jenny
